The PlayStation 5, or PS5 for short, will be more powerful and will have new exclusive titles, but the games you already have on PS4 will work on it
Sony today announced the PlayStation 5 through a video presentation. Their original plan was to show it off at the GDC, the world’s largest video game developer fair, but the coronavirus epidemic has made them change their plans.
The PS5 is a new, more powerful game console that includes improvements to make life easier for the player, as well as updated and more powerful processors. It is a qualitative leap in the making that, together with Microsoft’s new video game console, Xbox Series X, sponsors a new generation of video games.
PS5 will feature new exclusive video games (not sold for other game consoles) that will only work on the new model, leaving the PlayStation 4 behind. However, and following what its competition will do, PS4 video games will not only work on PS5 They will do so with improvements in both their appearance (better graphics) and in what they take to run.
The latter is due to a new hard drive technology that Sony has implemented on PS5, which in theory allows many processes that previously took seconds to now be instantaneous. It is similar to the solid state hard drives (SSD) that most modern computers have today and will greatly reduce the time to start playing a video game. And more importantly, it seems that video game updates (installing ‘patches’) will not harm the player and will hardly notice him.
In addition, PS5 has a much more powerful processor, more RAM and a GPU (graphics processing card) with much more gross power, although it seems that a little below its direct competitor: PS5 has 10 teraflops and XBX, 12 teraflops.
The amount of ‘teraflops’ that a game console has is usually the indicator with which many players evaluate the power of a game console, so the controversy can be assured given the difference between the two systems, however small it may be.
Another great feature is the sound, which according to Sony will be in 3D, better recreating the environments and how the sound is distributed in video game settings. It is not yet clear how this will be implemented, however.
And finally, the return of ‘memory cards’, which would not be used to save games, but to expand the space of the console and be able to install more video games. It seems that PS5 will have a tray to insert hard drives of small size, but great capacity and speed. It’s similar to what the Xbox Series X will do.
- CPU: 8x Zen 2 Cores at 3.5GHz (variable frequency)
- GPU: 10.28 TFLOPs, 36 CUs at 2.23GHz RDNA 2
- RAM: 16GB GDDR6 / 256-bit
- Disc reader: 4K UHD Blu-ray Drive
- Internal storage: 825GB modified SSD hard drive
- External Storage: NVMe SSD Slot
Both the new Xbox and PS5 are very similar and rely on similar points, something logical if we consider that most video games that are released today are compatible with both and both Sony and Microsoft want to make life as easy as possible to the developers of Fortnite, Call of Duty, Assassin’s Creed and other multi-million dollar franchises.
However, a strong point in which both game consoles compete is still that of exclusive video games. Sony has many names of weight that sooner or later will make an appearance on PS5, from God of War to Uncharted, also passing through Gran Turismo, Spiderman, Bloodborne, etc. At the moment, none of these names has made an appearance in the new game console and Sony has dedicated to reserve them for when there are less months to launch PS5.
Sony has achieved great success with PS4, which has sold much more than Xbox One in its six years of life and which has become one of the most popular video game consoles in history, with permission from PS2, PS1 and Wii.
The situation of the video game market, however, is quite different compared to November 2013. If in its day it was enough to make a more powerful video game console and nourish it with video games, we are currently living in a time of change in which it seems that the Services around video games and being able to play them via streaming can be the future of the medium.
PS5 will have to compete not only with Xbox Series X in features and with Nintendo Switch in formats, but also with Xbox Game Pass and Apple Arcade in terms of subscription services and with Google in terms of streaming.
The strength of the PlayStation brand, which in December 2019 celebrated its 25 years of existence, continues to drag millions of consumers around the world, especially in Spain; But the video game industry can radically switch between launch and console launch. Although it is hard to imagine, Fortnite did not exist when PS4 was launched, but it has been one of the names that could well define its legacy.
